Hello all!
Hope you all had a great weekend! We had some crazy weather over the weekend followed by a nice cool change on the sunday…I can’t keep up with this constant change in weather every few days! I must admit…I tried to shove myself in between my fridge and freezer to get some much-needed cold air…*guilty look* maybe once or twice…
For my cheat meal last Saturday, I decided to try a new place for breakfast. Mr Muscles had promised to take me out for breakfast on Saturday morning so this was the perfect opportunity! I had seen a few reviews of this place but mostly dinner reviews so I was eager to try out the breakfast here as I saw they had an extensive breakfast menu on their website.
Public Dining Room is situated on Balmoral Beach located in Mosman. It is a lovely place to go to if you want to enjoy a nice breakfast or lunch and enjoy the views of the harbour and the surrounding beach. The saturday morning I went, the weather however was slightly overcast and it was drizzling with rain so all I could see outside the restaurant were plenty of clouds. I can imagine though when the weather is nicer that this place would be very busy. I got to the restaurant early in case it was busy. The restaurant opens at 8:00am on the weekends for breakfast and then followed by lunch from 12 noon.
The restaurant itself feels very modern and has a nice open space between each table. The design of the furniture and the inside of the restaurant is simple but elegant at the same time.
The breakfast menu provided many options from healthy options, savoury options and sweet options to satisfy all your taste buds. I had looked at the menu earlier so I knew what I wanted to get however I know I want to go back to try more of their menu next time.
Mr Muscles ordered his standard coffee and was happily surprised to see that their coffees are Campos coffees.
My breakfast would not be complete without having a cup of green tea as I’m not a coffee drinker.
Corn Fritters, char-grilled hand cut free range bacon, house-made green tomato relish, baby cress salad $21.00
Breakfast Crumble – Vanilla Roasted Apple, Orange Poached Rhubarb, Oat Crumble and Earl Grey Custard $18.00
I, on the other hand, decided to order the oat crumble purely because it seemed like something different and I wanted to satisfy my dying sweet tooth…and further to that…you had me at Earl Grey Custard! I love all things Earl Grey and I was so excited to see a breakfast item with Earl Grey in it that I knew I had to order it.
The Oat Crumble was a pretty heavy and decadent dish perhaps more suited for breakfasts in winter. The poached fruit was soft and melted in your mouth with each bite and contrasted with the crunch of the oat crumble. The custard was more like a milk and when poured over the crumble, it added more depth to the dish. The cool custard against the hot poached fruit and the crunchy oat crumble. This was so decadent and rich that I could not finish it all. I was kind of hoping for more of a custard like texture to the Earl Grey custard as I thought the custard was too thin. This was definitely a sweet dish and more for people who love all things crumble. I was never a fan of crumbles for dessert so I was surprised that I didn’t mind this. Though perhaps this is a dish for when you are feeling super hungry.
An inside shot of my oat crumble dish….look at the poached rhubarb…mmmm….
Mr Muscles ordered a side of toast (from the Sonoma Bakery) – organic sourdough, wholemeal miche, soy & linseed served with strawberry & vanilla jam or seville & star anise marmalade $8.00
I tried the wholemeal miche toast (the one on the right) as I haven’t tried this bread before. Definitely a bread I will get again. It paired really well with the strawberry & vanilla jam. I wasn’t a fan of the marmalade however so I stuck to the strawberry jam. I liked that the bread came out on a wooden board. You can tell this restaurant prides itself on presentation and quality of food.
Next time I visit I will definitely be trying the other savoury options such as the baked eggs and the soft polenta.
Though not considered a bargain place for breakfast as many of the breakfast items are quite pricey, you pay for the quality of the food served.
